The Sun Down Motel by Simone St. James
5.0
1982, Upstate New York: Viv Delaney, a 20 year old 'vivacious' girl & aspiring actress on her way to the dazzling New York city from Illinois unwillingly ends up in the godforsaken town of Fell. Running away from a suffocating home, she's the outsider girl turned lonely night clerk at the Sundown Motel who on one cold November night vanishes into thin air without a trace in the middle of her night shift as if she'd never worked there carrying with her terrible secrets and furious ghosts beyond the town's wildest nightmares.
35 years later....
2017, Upstate New York: Carly Kirk, the new girl in town, is the 20 year old niece of the missing Viv Delaney on a quest to uncover the mystery of her aunt's sudden disappearance. A truecrime aficionado, she will do whatever it takes to solve this cold case that has rattled her entire life. She would even go to the lengths to take up the night shift job at the infamously haunted Sundown Motel working in her aunt's shift. As she embarks on this thrillingly dangerous project partnered with an equally invested roommate she finds herself deep into the rabbit hole of ghost trails, banging doors and dead girls in the town just like her aunt got obsessed with solving the dead girls all those years ago, trying to hunt down the hunter(s).
This is suspenseful truecrime meets supernatural thriller with lots of jumpy, nailbiting scenes that keeps you hooked. I loved the shifting dual perspective of Viv's thought process leading up to her disappearance and Carly as she investigates 35 years later interwoven to give us a whole rounded picture of the mystery and the ghosts. The audiobook narrators did a fantastic voice especially for Viv. I could picture Viv Delaney as a real and tangible person. The ending tied the threads pretty neatly. Overall it was a really enjoyable, atmospheric, spooky read with murder, intrigue, and small town autumnal vibes perfect for a cosy weather.
