This book was too long to be anything but inconsistent. It's unfortunate because there are some genuinely good lines and the novel kept me up at night more than once. King is a good writer (with highly questionable taste on display here) but horror needs maintained tension and there is just no way to maintain tension over 1,000+ pages. In repeatedly building and releasing tension throughout the course of such a long novel, King inevitably loses the reader.
