Wolf Tower by Tanith Lee
3.0
This is a supposedly young adult fantasy novel, the first one of the quartet, published in 1998, but it seems to me more of a middle grade book. The writing is very simple, the story, as well as characters not well developed, and the values are rather dated (marriage is very important here). Not sure I will continue with the series, as even my mind, slowed as it is by the quarantine anxiety wants to process something brighter.
What I liked about the Wolf Tower is the weirdness of the world building. I think Tanith Lee is good in that department. I’ve read three novels of hers, and all of them are unforgettably special - dark, weird, and a bit sick. I really wonder what’s the deal with women, men, and sexuality in her books though, because every one I’ve read has a passive heroine, a powerful mother figure, and a seemingly superior, detached male. Dr Freud is getting curious.
