'Perhaps you think it wrong that I dwell so much on the horrors, the pain, but pain is what shapes us, after all. We are creatures born of heat and pressure and grinding, ceaseless movement. To be still is to be... not alive.'
.
The fact that this book sat on my TBR for a whole year is a disgrace. If it is sat gathering dust on your shelf, pick it up and read it. I promise you won't regret it. If you don't own this book, what are you waiting for? Just buy it already. I can't even begin to explain how good The Fifth Season is, it is a bloody masterpiece. Not a word was wasted in the entire book.
.
The world building is incredible. Throughout the book, we switch between three different timelines, learning about the world and it's origins. About the Orogenes and the powers they harness from the earth. About the prejudice and fear they face, their lack of freedom and enslavement. I fell in love with Essun, I felt her pain and her struggles and her hunger to just destroy everything that got in her way.
.
Jemisin is a genius; all of the injustice faced by the Orogenes rings true is our world too. Black people face prejudice every single day and are still being killed for no good reason. If you are looking to diversify your shelf (if you're not just unfollow me already💁‍♀️), you need to read this book.
.
I will be picking up The Obelisk Gate as soon as I can, this one ends on a cliffhanger and I'm dying to know what is going to happen next.
