Cemetery Boys by Aiden Thomas
4.0
First of all, this narrator was amazing! But also, the book was, too. It was such a fun ride. It did start off kind of slow, but I understand we needed to build the world a bit. I love Yadriel and his fierce attitude despite being shy and unsure, his loyalty to his friends and family, and his determination. Also his kindness. I adore Julian and his fun personality, his loyalty, especially to his friends, and his joy. And Maritza is simply amazing. She's got to be my favorite. I love that she does her own thing and couldn't care less what anyone thinks. And she's such a strong supporter of Yads! I loved the idea that Yads is this trans kid trying to find his place in a world where magic is binary. I love even more that he and Maritza find it on their own at the beginning. From there, it's a fun journey to discover what is going on with Julian and Miguel's bodies as well as watching the relationship grow between Yads and Jules. I love exploring Julian's life and seeing that his tough exterior is just a defense mechanism and his friends and family are just a group of rejects who found each other. The third act conflict was a little predictable, but I'm honestly not even upset about that. It was great! And the solution was great. I laughed a few times, I cried quite a few times, and I was really rooting for these teens.
