4.0
Plot: 3.5/5
Character: 3.5/5
Relationships: 3.5/5
World-Building: 4/5
Genre: 4.5/5
Plot: My enjoyment of the plot really varied - for the first third of the book I was really underwhelmed and considered DNFing it, however as soon as the two main characters met I began to really love it. I think my personal hatred for too much exposition meant that the slow start really bored me but as soon as the plot got going I really enjoyed it. The conclusion was well played out however there were a few moments when I kind of lost track of all of the big reveal's (especially the MULTIPLE different "oh look it turns out we're related" reveals - which kind of got a bit repetitive after a while)
Character: Generally, I found most of the characters tolerable - my favourite being Altair (the snarky best friend character trope will always be a personal fav) I liked the 2 POVs - It helped you get into the heads of the main characters well however I did start to get a bit annoyed at the repetitive self-pitying of the characters.
Relationships: Obviously the main relationship was not really my thing (enemies to lovers) but I appreciated the tension between the two characters and the way it kept building was really nice. Personally, my favourite relationship was the banter between Altair and Nasir - I really enjoyed the snark this dynamic created. The other relationships between characters (mainly family-based) were alright but I didn't really feel strongly about them.
World-Building: For a while, I really hated the complexity of the world-building (especially as I only discovered the glossary at the back of the book about 2/3 of the way through) but once I got used to the new terminology and magic system I did really enjoy it.
Genre: This book really stood out to me because of its world-building, it felt very different to other fantasy worlds I've read about, I loved the attention to detail - especially with the sensory imagery which really put it above the rest in terms of immersion in the story
I still haven't decided if I want to read the next book yet - I will have to see
