The overall writing was very childish (so many exclamation points and corny/cringy thoughts from the FMC - i.e. "Now she couldn't wait to go to school!"), and it made the main character seem way younger than 18. The final fight between the main characters and the villain was underwhelming, and for the most part it just seemed like everyone stood around/the villain waited nicely for the main characters to cast their spells. I would expect something of this level from a middle-grade book, not something geared toward young adults.
