The Hacienda by Isabel Cañas
5.0
I knew I was going to love The Hacienda from the very beginning. I don't usually like to compare books to other books, but the Rebecca vibes here were sooo strong in the first few chapters and I loved that for me. Isabel Cañas did a fantastic job with the setting and the eerie atmosphere surrounding San Isidro and I loved how the tension just kept building and building until the final chapter.
Beatriz and Andrés were wonderful narrators as well. I usually have some issues with split narratives and when the story goes back and forth from the present to the past and back again, but the writing here was so engaging that I didn't mind that at all. It didn't disrupt the flow of the store in ny way and served as a great resource to help with character development.
The plot was not entirely what I expected, but in the best of ways. I loved how Cañas really leaned into the supernatural aspect of it all and how she wrote basically my most favorite trope ever: sentient (haunted) houses. I had so so much fun reading about all the creepy things happening in the hacienda and how they kept escalating until the twist--which wasn't what I thought was going to happen! It was a great experience, personally.
And the ending! Also not at all what I thought was going to happen, but I thought it fit so well with the overall tone of the book. It was hopeful and yet realistic and the final chapter from Andrés perspective read to me as so sweet with what was happening with the house. I really really loved this book and Cañas take on my favorite horror setting <3
