The Long Way to a Small, Angry Planet by Becky Chambers

5.0

Have I ever mentioned how much I love found family?

If I'm completely honest, as excited as I was to read this book, I was pretty intimidated by it. I don't know if I've read adult SF before this, and this one's pretty long. I am so glad I finally decided to pick it up.

This book is pretty light on plot. There is, of course, the overarching plotline of the Wayfarer traveling to Hedra Ka in order to complete their job, but the majority of the book highlights the situations the crew finds themselves in along the way. I understand that this might not work for everyone, but I really loved it. The "bonding as a group" is my favorite part of found family stories.

I did expect the relationship between Rosemary and Sissix to be a little more central to the story, but I'm not disappointed. I loved to focus on the friendships between the original crew members and those that they developed with Rosemary just as much. I appreciate strong friendships just as much as I do romantic ones!

I... did not like Corbin. I figured at first that he would grow on me, and I was right, at first. I felt at least sympathetic towards him. But then the end happened and I'm really uncomfortable with the scene where he forced Ohan through a medical (?) treatment they expressly stated that they did not want. I know there's an expression of forgiveness at the end, but the whole thing just didn't sit well with me.

But that was really my only issue. Overall, I loved this book and I teared up at several points throughout, which will tell you how much of a favorite of mine this book is.
