God. I loved this so much. I had never read anything by N. K. Jemisin before this short story, but I'm even more excited to read more of her works now. This was such an interesting take. I'm not a big lover of science fiction (I'm actively trying to rectify that), but it's stories like these that make me glad I haven't given up on the genre yet. If you have Kindle Unlimited, drop whatever you're doing and read this.
