Did a very- aham- excitable 13 year old boy write this? What?! A 42 year old man did back in 2005? Insanity.
If I hadn’t read one of his more recent books, The Deep Deep Snow, I would never have picked up another one of his books again after this one. But luckily I have been blessed with the remarkable gift of foresight and I know his writing gets much, much better.
I will take the advice of that cute but mildly disturbing cat poster that was in every school teacher’s classroom once upon a time telling me to “hang in there!” (I mean you have to admit, it was kind of distressing never knowing- did it fall? Did it survive? Was it rescued? Or is it still hanging in there, forever suspended in a sick, never ending frame of torment meant to rally the motivation and spirits of struggling youths? These are questions we will never know.)
Anyways.
I will soldier on. You’re welcome, Brian.
