For the Hell of It by Cate Corvin
3.0
Melisandre has fallen from grace, quite literally and now she's out for blood. After being condemned to Hel for a crime she didn't commit, she's ready to battle the Prince of Wrath, Lucifer, Nephilim, Watchers, and even Satan himself to claw her way back to Heaven to execute her revenge.
She fell from Heaven, but I promise you she’s no saint
In the city of Dis- formerly known as "The city of sin and the heart of Hell," she learns that maybe being struck out from Heaven maybe wasn't such a bad thing. As she experiences emotions for the first time, she has the opportunity to truly live, without rules or guidelines, but passionately, from the heart.
The characters were very intriguing and I believed the author introduced some interesting and dynamic male heart-throbs. I enjoyed that each male appreciates a different aspect of her and they aren't all gunning for her looks or body. Lucifer has constantly been looking for another fallen Angel he can relate to, Belial wants to enjoy the rush of war and sex with her, Tascius wants a mate to bond and Azazel is looking for someone to fill the void in his life. Besides the men, I loved the perky and sassy attitude of her fellow female characters, especially everyone's favorite resident glitter queen.
Nothing said ‘your soul is mine’ like sparkly fingernails
The writing was equal parts snarky sarcasm and cute humor. When we think Reverse Harem (RH) we expect hot as hell sex scenes and off the charts chemistry which I think Cate Corvin nailed! It's quite vulgar and raunchy and full of alpha males that know what they want and aren't afraid to go after it.
What was fucking if not another form of fighting?
My only peeve with this book was with Mel and how she approached the various love interests. My difficulties arose from how she was written and then how she behaved, we were lead to believe she was an Angel, pure and innocent yet she embraces lust and other vices almost immediately. I understand the intent of the author, to highlight the dilemma between what she knows and what her body is telling her but the interactions were very inconsistent. One minute she wants to get hot and heavy and then the other she is shying away (urghhh !). As a person I yearned for stronger personal growth, I wanted her to betray her body and focus on herself. I wanted Mel to earn respect and show herself worthy of the male admiration- to be more than just brute force.
The writing also seems a bit patchy- the beginning needed more details and depth to grip us and set the pace and certain scenes seemed rushed and needed more elaboration. Mel's fights in the arena were an excellent opportunity to showcase her prowess as a warrior but instead, they came across as lackluster and her fast domination over her opponents seemed bland.
Overall it was an interesting concept with strong characters and big personality and I would read more into the series.
