Frankenstein in Baghdad by Ahmed Saadawi
4.0
A fantastical tale of life in war-torn Baghdad, complete with government-sponsored Astrologers, ambitious journalists, suicide bombers, lying (or maybe just truth-embellishing?) junk dealers, an old lady who talks to a picture of St George, and yes, a Frankensteinesque man built of body parts, filled with the soul of a man killed by a bomb, and resurrected by some mysterious power to avenge the innocent (or so he thinks). The Whatshisname has a fascinating journey throughout this book as he struggles to find his new purpose in the world. Who brought him back, and why? And is it ethical for him to use the body parts of criminals to keep himself animated, or is he eventually becoming a criminal himself?
