This totally hit the spot of maritime fantasy that I was looking for! I loved the worldbuilding here so much, and the author really fleshed out the culture of this society while keeping other things more mysterious like the dragons and wind magic.
One of the more interesting things this book does is have the character who we are following not be the main chatacter. Joron is a character who grapples with cowardice and his failures as a captain. He also has resentment for the very capable captain meas who takes his place. As a character he is very interesting, but captain meas feels like a protagonist, a complicated character with interesting backstory who we spend a lot of time with. It creates this interesting effect where it feels like we are being told the story of meas and the crews adventure from a specific perspective. It took me a bit to get used to but I ended up enjoying it.
The plot itself is very interesting and I loved the mystery of the arakeesian and the spiritual connection to the sea.
Very good book :)
