In this book Rocky and her husband Nick vacation in Cap Cod with their daughter and son and his girlfriend. Her parents are along for part of the time. The theme and title converge to describe  Rocky’s status in a sandwich generation, worried about her aging parents and her just out of the nest children. Rocky also makes a lot of sandwiches and they are at the beach in Sandwich, MA. I love Cape Cod and have spent many happy hours there- the writer captured the essence of summer at the cape completely. Rocky’s love for her children, pride in their lives, and sorrow at the loss of their childhoods rang true and was so real to me. my experience caring for my aging parents made her relationship seem less direct and involved such that that aspect of being in the sandwich generations was less believable to me. Abortion is an  issue in this book and I’m glad I was warned about it. If you are a seriously pro life reader, this is not the book for you. This seems like a literary fiction favorite- I enjoyed it but it wasn’t as spectacular as i thought it would be given that i lived the sandwich generation life for several years
