Clementine, Book One by Tillie Walden

4.0

I'm a Tillie Walden fan and completist so approached her latest with some trepidation since it was set in the world of Walking Dead, something I have not read before and was worried was too commercial for her. My trepidation was largely unwarranted. The black-and-white drawing was beautiful, the characters had depth, the plot was fine, and the atmosphere was extraordinary. Sure there were zombies (and I have nothing against zombies), but they were largely in the background in a story that was about a teenage loner (Clementine) reluctantly teaming up with other damaged teenagers to face their very emotional and physical struggles together. A few of the drawings (e.g., them riding up a chairlift at the long-abandoned Killington) were particularly memorable. And the relationship between Clementine and Ricca (who seemed like a recognizable Walden character) looks like a promising aspect of the story to develop in the promised next two volumes.
