The Outlaw Demon Wails by Kim Harrison
4.0
Okay, honestly I ended up liking this a lot more than I was expecting, mainly because of the last 33%, but I had to take a star off because this is the only book not narrated by Marguerite Gavin and it really showed. The narrator used for this book made Jenks sound like a little kid, Rachel was a lot whinier than usual, Piscary's name was butchered, and the other voices just didn't work for me. There was a new character introduced, Bis, the gargoyle, who sounds like he might end up being interesting, but the voice was just a bit odd. I'm hoping Bis shows up in future books and I'm really curious how Gavin will voice it. It's got to be better than this!
This was a slower start as the main goal is to get Rachel and Kalamack into the Ever After so he can get genetic samples of elves for before the turn and she can get samples of Al. We learn so much more about the past and how it connects with what's going on now and yeah, I was blown away. There are a ton of plot threads and Harrison does a great job of weaving them together and developing them just enough in each book. Rachel and her team are mourning and the author takes the time to address their pain, but at the same time, things are still going on and she does that well. I still think Rachel is not the brightest bulb, but she does make up for it with her tenacity and heart. I haven't read the rest of the books yet, but I suspect this book will act as a major turning point in the overall plot.
I'm looking forward to continuing with this series!
