The Poison Eaters and Other Stories by Holly Black

2.0

Some of the stories I liked SO MUCH MORE than others. The vampire story felt a little too heavy handed as an allegory for drug use, but on the other hand I can imagine that for a young reader it would be more meaningful. As an old reader (hah!) it felt like too much. On the other hand, the story about the girl making a deal with the devil was whimsical and weird and a little scary; same for the eponymous story of the book. It is definitely the star of the collection, and I think if I had started with it I wouldn't have continued with the rest. :P

Which is all to say - these stories are good for what they are. Short, fun, a little scary. They aren't great by any means, but they are entertaining.
