The Girl With All the Gifts by M.R. Carey
4.0
4 star
It's a tricky book to review. I had no idea what this book was about when I picked it up. The synopsis was so intriguing that I just couldn't not buy this book. At first, i thought this book will be a psychological thriller about a mentally ill girl living in an asylum, who thinks there is nothing wrong with her but when her other side takes over she kills people.
It should come as no surprise that I was wrong, this book was actually about zoombies. Yes! Another zoombie novel. The start of the book was creepy and dark and amazing. the character of Melanie - the protagonist- was so well written. The middle bored me to death, around 200 pages were a waste of paper. I was determined to give this book 2 star but the ending of the book just creeped me out in a good way, of course. the ending made up for all the boring and not so interesting parts of the book. Most of the book was predictable but the ending was something I could have never imagined.
*MILD SPOILERS*
The zoombies in this book weren't actually undead. They were just human beings infected by zoombie virus and they had process to age and metamorphose into fruiting form when they reach an end of their flesh eating live. Melanie, however, was special, she was just like human beings, she could think and learn unlike other zoombies A.K.A hungries. The infection had affected her differently, that's why she was so special and valuable to the people keeping her. Melanie, had no idea who she was and why everyone was so scared of her. Only her teacher, miss justineau, treated her with kindness. The bond she and her teacher formes is the most important part of the story and probably the only reason why you will read this book till the end.
