Very nearly DNF’d this book but I kept reading to see if the twist everyone talked about was as good as they made it seem,,, I should have DNF’d.

The summary makes this sound like a completely different book. I thought I was getting a pair of established serial killers whose final victim was crafty and managed to give them a run for their money. Instead I got way too many chapters of Spooky Children (an ick of mine) and eventually a heroine who didn’t seem to understand her criminal investigations work, which was fine cause the cops didn’t get it either. Very disappointing bait and switch :/

I called the twist at about 20% and spent the rest of the book very badly wishing I was wrong because surely such an ableist and transphobic premise wouldn’t be written in 2024 right? Wrong! Several of my friends are trans systems and this book was a gross caricature of both those things.

Let’s move past using gender nonconforming neurodivergent people as serial killers please!
