Wilder Girls by Rory Power
5.0
**Reread in 2022
I received an eARC copy of Wilder Girls back in 2019 and never reviewed it on Goodreads, but it was a 5-star read back then, and rereading it in 2022 it still holds up as one of my all-time favorite books!!
Wilder Girls is a gruesome, raw, sapphic, and oh so dark story about survival and friendships.
It was a weird time finally rereading the book that I tell everyone is my favorite. Sometimes I forget how long it has been. I vividly remember the first time I read it. It was the first sapphic book that I had ever read and I had stayed up all night to binge read it.
The way that Rory Power writes just speaks to me. It's dark and atmospheric and totally the vibe I love in books. I love how she uses nature as a prevalent subject throughout the story. I love the characters and how they are built up and change throughout the book. I love the relationship aspect and how it's just barely there because maintaining a relationship during this contagion is not realistic. I love the shift in character perspective and how it's used to build up more of the plot and give more information as to what's going on.
And yeah I am rambling about why I love this book so much.
But one thing about Wilder Girls that I love that a lot of people seem to hate is the ending.
I adore the ending. It matches the vibe of the book perfectly. It doesn't try and sugarcoat anything. It's raw and realistic. It didn't need anything extra because it got its point across. I'm in love with the way Rory Power wrote the ending and while I get why it might not work for some people, it's definitely the kind of ending that will stick with me.
Anyways, raving done. Go read this book if you haven't.
Sorta, kinda, buddy read this with my friend Ola!!
Rating: 5 freaking gold stars
