The Good Daughter by Karin Slaughter
5.0
Wow. Wow. One more wow. I did NOT expect this kind of book from Karin Slaughter. Please know that I like the Will Trent series, but it was getting repetitive. However, I love her writing overall. But this book read like someone else wrote it. I GAVE IT FIVE STARS! It was well-deserved!
The best way to sum up this book is to say that it makes you visualize the unthinkable in vivid detail. I mean VIVID! Wooooo!! The first chapter had me hooked and I couldn’t put it down. I truly don’t want to give it away, but if you’ve ever lost a parent, this book will kick you in the gut. But because you care about what happens to the daughters after that terrible day, you have to keep reading. If you’ve ever had a complicated relationship with your siblings, this would be a good book to explore. If you haven’t talked to your family in a while, it will certainly make you pick up the phone and call them.
Two smart, athletic daughters live with their parents in an old, dusty house in which they had just moved. The dad Rusty is a defense attorney who always represents the scum of the earth in their small town and their mom Gamma was a beautiful and smart, eccentric woman who was a math, physics and science wiz. What happens to them on that one faithful day completely changes the trajectories of their lives. The brutal attack was exactly that....VERY brutal. It made you wonder how anyone could keep living. But they did.
This book had it all and it was such an entertaining read. The best part about this book is not knowing...not knowing how it will all end and feeling satisfied that you couldn’t QUITE figure it out. Sure, early on, one could say that they knew exactly who did it. But even if you think you know (and might be correct), you don’t know the “why” and that was my favorite part of the book. I don’t always care about WHO....but I MUST always know WHY!
Ms. Slaughter used varying points of view to add layers and surprises, but wasn’t at all confusing. Granted, it could have been 100 pages shorter because it rambled in a few places, but I felt we’d get there eventually.
I thoroughly enjoyed this book. I’ve read quite a few of her books and this is THE best one! Now, can someone make it into a movie!!
