Funny Story by Emily Henry

4.0

Ready for something sugary I eagerly reached for my copy of Funny Story, my fifth Emily Henry read. From chapter one I was hooked, girl sure knows how to write an opening chapter!

Here's what I liked:
+ The premise was quirky and fun. So much to play with and enjoyable to step in to.
+ There's always been a 'what if' or 'road not travelled' feeling for me and being a librarian. So it's always fun to step into the shoes of a Librarian and walk around in them for a while. Daphne's role as a Children's librarian especially sounded fun.
+Unexpected exploration of friendship and making friends in your 30s. Really liked this element to the plot. Loved how blunt and real Ashley was.
+Setting itself became a character and it was great to live through Daphne not only falling in love with Miles, but also Waning Bay, Michigan. Do all of these places actually exist? Sounds like an awesome area visit.
+Loved the ending, especially one of the final lines. IYKYK

Here's what I didn't enjoy:
- I get that the characters are flawed, they're often lovable because they are flawed BUT the final little problem at the end when Miles doesn't communicate with Daphne, actually infuriating!
- Most of the writing isn't as literary or as sparkly as usual and some of the banter fell a little flat for me.

If anything, this book made me reflect on the need to go back and reread some of her other works.
