Delilah Green Doesn't Care by Ashley Herring Blake
Did not finish book. Stopped at 17%.
I may try to give this one another chance because it was so hyped up online, but I just couldn't get past the fact that the author describes every new character as a beautiful white woman. And I'm not saying this because white women can't be beautiful, I've just never seen an author write it out like that and it really jarred me out of the story. I've also read MANY books that have an all white cast, but it still isn't made a point to be that so explicitly.
I also just couldn't relate to queer characters coming out in middle school and being popular and accepted and all these popular girls were queer in some way. Again, I'm a queer woman and I'm not dogging the queerness so much as the unrealistic acceptance of the LGBTQ community in middle school. I think the author was trying to come off as accepting and open, and I applaud the effort, but it fell short for me.
Maybe I just couldn't relate to the characters or the setting, being a Latina who couldn't come out because I grew up in a place that it's dangerous to be queer and not-white. I don't know.
