As Soon As I Fell: A Memoir by Kay Bruner

4.0

I read this straight through in about two days, which is pretty fast for me. Kay Bruner recounts her story of a being a missionary in a very challenging place. She was able to do what she did because she thought she had to be successful, perfect, and sacrificial. She carried on in spite of great difficulties, but neither she nor her husband dealt with their real feelings, their scars, their stress, or their need to perform for God. As a result, he ended up with pornography addiction and she ended up with a nervous breakdown. She shares how the very thing that was supposed to help her made it all worse, but it also was the thing that helped her realize how she was living by works, not by grace. This is a great book for anybody, but especially good for missionaries. I highly recommend it!
