I’m picky with YA books nowadays and went into this one with hesitation, despite Ali Hazelwood being my favourite author. But I absolutely loved it. I think it helps that it’s more upper YA.

Who would have thought  meet cute surrounding chess would be entertaining? I love both the character growth of Mallory and Nolan, they both have their own past that they’re struggling to deal with. I love the representation and discussions around women in sports and intellectual games like chess. I also am someone who knows very little about chess, but it did not hinder my enjoyment of this book. It is spoon worthy, it is cute, the banter is enjoyable and addicting. Ali Hazelwood did not disappoint and I’m really glad I gave this book a chance. if you’re looking for a cute contemporary read that still feels mature, and it’s not set in a high school then I highly recommend this one. You’ll be giggling, laughing, kicking your feet and swooning over all the scenes.
