Writing Down the Bones: Freeing the Writer Within by Natalie Goldberg
3.0
I found a decent amount of this book useful, with lots of encouragement to just write and not get too caught up in what comes next. A large portion of it is anecdotes, such as workshops she’s held in addition to snippets from her own life.
From about the halfway point though, I didn’t enjoy it as much. There was more focus on more technical aspects of writing such as verbs and such. Many of the examples are poems, which I find much harder to connect with as it’s not my thing. I also found the last third or so of the book didn’t seem as well structured as the beginning, so it wasn’t as easy to understand what she was trying to teach.
There are lots of useful exercises and interesting comments throughout though.
I didn’t particularly enjoy the language she used when talking about fat people, weight etc. It might be a 1980’s thing as I didn’t get the impression she was attacking anyone, it was just something I noticed.
