The Practice of the Presence of God by Brother Lawrence
challenging
reflective
fast-paced
2.0
A little book on keeping our thoughts constantly on loving, thanking and adoring God. This was a practice that Brother Lawrence mastered 300 years ago, and one that he encouraged all others to incorporate into their lives. I can see the benefit of it, and will endeavor to do this myself.
One word of caution, however. Brother Lawrence didn’t mention reading the Scriptures at all in this book, which is concerning for me. He seems to have relied totally on his subjective internal experiences of God to learn about Him (it bordered on mysticism at times).
It’s hard to rate a book like this which has been a beloved classic for hundreds of years, but I can’t write a review of this book without mentioning this.
As I stated in the beginning, I did find some benefit in reading this, but I wouldn’t recommend it to anyone else without first explaining a few of the shortcoming of this work as well.
