One of Us Is Next by Karen M. McManus
5.0
This book ruined me.
I did enjoy One of Us is Lying, but I did prefer Two Can Keep A Secret, since I think the characters were way more likeable and the plot was harder to guess. Or I just have an obsession with small town mysteries and psychological thrillers. Probably not the latter. Probably the latter.
Anyway. Let us discuss out narrators.
In One of Us is Lying, you get four different POVs, Bronwyn, Nate, Addie and Cooper. It took me a while to warm us to some of the POVs, but we had none of that in One of Us is Next.
Phoebe
Was like an Addie jr. The popular girl turned outcast kind of thing with her own original spin on it. Her dad is dead so her family is pretty much falling apart.
Maeve
Maeve is Bronwyn’s younger sister, who was present in One of Us is Lying, but played a minor part. She had leukaemia, so she spent a lot of time in and out of hospital. I really liked her POV, and the fact that though it, we sometimes got to see the original Bayview four.
Knox
Knox is Maeve’s best friend. And well yeah. I really loved his POV. I don’t really know why. I JUST DID OK? (okay.) but he’s been sorta neglected by his Dad and he’s got a bunch of older sisters.
✨THE PLOT✨
I think the plot was way better than the one in One of Us is Lying. At least I thought that. Basically it’s this school-wide truth or dare game where you get messaged by ‘Unknown’ and you have 24hours to reply with truth or dare. If you don’t do anything, you get a secret exposed. I really love any sort of concept like an online game. (My love for books like that sparked with Nerve, where we will never walk down that memory lane again. Ever.)
I feel like the plot was also more laid back if anyone understands what I mean. (No one will rip) But it was like the perfect kind of murder mystery for me. It didn’t feel like a murder mystery. Like in One of Us is Lying, (I’m sorry I keep comparing the two lol) Addie, Nate, Cooper and Bronwyn were like: (from what I remember anyway. It’s been like, 4 months) we have to solve this to defend ourselves! Where as Phoebe, Knox and Maeve were still trying to figure things out, but it was a lot more focused on their personal lives.
Anyway, enough said.
I still think Two Can Keep a Secret is my favourite Karen M. McManus book (I haven’t read The Cousins yet rip) but I loved this all the same.
I desperately need another book though.
Desperately.
