No Place for Monsters by Kory Merritt
5.0
No Place for Monsters (Book #1) written & illustrated by Kory Merritt
The prologue really pulled my daughter & I into this story! It starts off strong & you’ll be hooked. My daughter read this book first then I read it on my own & we discussed it afterwards. We both really enjoyed it & it was her first “horror” story. No Place for Monster is a middle-grade horror adventure story & when I was little that was right up my alley. I loved little creepy horror stories!
My daughter said there were a few times she was really scared & I could see that in many of the illustrations. Author Merritt’s fantastical creepy style of illustrations was hypnotizing & enrapturing. The artwork was quite detailed & truly brings the story to life!
This story is about two 12-year-old kids who discover that little kids in their town are in danger. Levi is a kid from the city who just moved into suburbia, Cowslip Grove. Kat is an outsider that doesn’t have any friends, often annoys her teachers in class & is kind of rude & annoying. I do end up liking her character. My daughter said “she’s so much better at the end & in the next book”.
Levi & Kat discover that kids are vanishing & not a trace of them remains. No one remembered they exist. Their own families don’t remember them. They disappeared from photos, records are wiped & their rooms are gone. It’s like the movie Men In Black! But Levi & Kat remember. They start seeing things for what they are…and it involves lots of monsters.
Truly enjoyed Levi as a character – such a sweet kid. My favorite is a little monster called Willow. Read the story! You’ll find her a bit endearing in an ugly hairless dog kind of way. A very delightful creepy horror story indeed. The sequel published recently Sept 14!
