The Way Through the Woods: On Mushrooms and Mourning by Bernadette Dunne, Long Litt Woon, Barbara J. Haveland

3.0

Tricky to review this one. I did find some excellent little tid bits of new knowledge on mycology and these were fascinating.

But ...

They were so few. The writing was incredibly repetitive and I couldn’t help feel that some of the things the writer was surprised to learn about weren’t particularly interesting or surprising. I found the narration style rather childlike, lacking in a depth I suppose I hoped for given the subject matter. It was very fractured, the writer noting she went back and added the passages relating to her husband and her grieving, and I can’t help but feel the editors should have done more to bring this together. It is also FAR too long. I began skimming over paragraphs when I realised most of it was repeating things already said.

It is a sweet book, and if you have never considered mushrooms before there might be more in here for you.
