Jesus and John Wayne: How White Evangelicals Corrupted a Faith and Fractured a Nation by Kristin Kobes Du Mez

4.0

Jesus and John Wayne is an outstanding analysis of white evangelical culture and its near-obsessive push for a patriarchal family structure, national leader, and militarism. The book really made me question my own assumptions about complementarianism (though I'm for women's ordination), along with other ideas that are important to my own Christian identity.

My only complaint is Du Mez's bitter storytelling, sarcasm, and neglect of several monumental figures who either pushed back against white nationalism or attempted to push beyond the boundaries of the family-nation. Francis Chan, David Platt, and Matt Chandler are never mentioned, along with many other unsung heroes (Eugene Peterson???) who live faithfully within this subculture.
