The Future by Catherine Leroux

challenging dark emotional mysterious reflective slow-paced

2.5

I really struggled with the structure and language of this novel.  The numerous metaphors and similes were obscure and distracting.  The middle section (featuring the children) was a slog, and I lost all momentum.  My interest was rekindled somewhat in the third section, but I never totally got back into the story.  I wanted more about the politics and background regarding the setting (an alternative timeline where Detroit was never surrendered to the US).  The importance of community played a major role in this novel, and the characters were interesting and endearing.  Shortlisted for Canada Reads 2024.
