What I Liked:
  • I learned a lot about these communities and their traditions through this book. It was also cool to see a book about an Indigenous community set in present times - I feel like a lot of times, you only hear about these communities way in the past.
  • This book looked at big issues through a really interesting lens.
  • I loved the characters - they all had so much depth and meaning and felt very real.
  • Listening to this book was incredible because I got the true pronunciation of the words rather than butchering them in my mind because of sheer laziness.
  • Daunis' struggles with her identities were beautifully portrayed.
  • The writing was just beautiful.

What I Didn't Like/Wanted More Of:
  • I didn't love the glorification of cops (and a lot of those, arguably bad cops) in this book, but I understood the necessity of including them.

You Should Read If You Like:
  • Diversifying your shelves
  • Books about loss, family, hockey, or heartbreak.
