City of Glass by Cassandra Clare
1.0
I'm five chapters and I don't know, this book may be my breaking point.
I usually don't mind reading bad books, because they help me with my own writing and help me think of inconsistencies and things like that. I don't care that Clare copied or used a shit ton of tropes or whatever, a premise can be good even if it's cliche!
But God I hate Clary.
I hate how every female character is a caricature INCLUDING Clary and the male characters are just as bad because their personality revolves around their respective love interest 90% of the time. But God, Clary is one of the worst heroines in existence. See, at least with Twilight, Bella stayed fucking human for a good amount of time and I had an easier time believing this was just some fantasy Stephanie Meyer wrote for herself.
Clary is cut from the same stone, only she's just fuck all super special and annoying. Everything that I find horrible about her: her stubbornness, her tantrums, her selfishness, etc. IS PRAISED not a chapter later. Clary has super special powers, Clary is just oh so much like her mother, Clary is just *in love*. I think Clary is still ultimately supposed to be some power fantasy, but she actually HAS a personality beneath that. We're supposed to find it ~unique and oh so strong female character~ AND SHE'S HONESTLY JUST MAKING EVERYTHING HARDER FOR EVERYONE EXCEPT HERSELF and sometimes herself!! But usually the things she does has more consequences for others, while Clary gets a dose of deus ex machina so she can continue to move the plot along.
I started reading it again after Jace yelled at her and maybe I'm supposed to feel bad for her but I don't, I 100000% agree also
* CAN CLARY STOP THINKING ABOUT JACE FOR 2.5 SECONDS JESUS CHRIST EVERY FUCKING SENTENCE EVERY BREATH!!! 🙃
* this overdramatic Jace is a fucking demon bullshit fucking bye BYE!!!!! Also it's 👌🏽 to make out w your sister if you're a demon.
* why is Jace apologizing for his completely valid rant. Here's the thing maybe NEITHER of them think
* you know what I HATE about this book is the book didn't even make any redeeming traits for Sebastian like there's no care about the reveal he's evil because SURPRISE it's forced down your throat that something is wrong about him despite his nature, it's like this book is written for people who can't critically think
* the forced Isabelle/Simon makes me roll my eyes.
* the Jace love confession makes me roll my eyes
* I can't believe this series took place over A FEW WEEKS like I can't believe everything went to shit that quickly.
* Clary feels real disgust for kissing her real brother that she never felt with Jace. Why????? 💀
* I'M GOING TO SAVE JACE INSTEAD OF DO ANYTHING WORTH SOMETHING I GUESS
Gah 😬
I'm going to read infernal devices but discontinue with TMI, I have a vague idea of how it ends anyway.
