Had no idea what I was getting into with this, but it ended up being a beautiful adaptation of an old Norwegian fairytale I had never heard of. Pretty quickly I picked up on the strange tone that reminded me of other old fairy tales I'd read before, which was when I realized this was an authentic story and not someone attempting to create a modern fairytale. It reminded me a lot of KC Green's Pinocchio adaptation, the way it seems to stay true to the language and story of the source material while breathing new life into it with gorgeous illustrations that are brimming with personality. I'd say it reminds me of Adventure Time, which it kind of does, but that feels reductive. I adore this book. Highly recommend. (8.5/10)
