The Hero's Guide to Saving Your Kingdom by Christopher Healy
5.0
When I was picking up this book I thought I was going completely crazy. I have never heard of it before (first saw it as a goodreads recommendation) and it is a middle school book. Now I know (well, at least I hope) I was completely sane, because this book is awesome!!! The characters! The plot! The humor! Everything was just so perfect!
Although the characters were simplified (they all had only like one trait and that was it) they still didn't feel just black and white and their interactions seemed real. Also they were all equally well written so you really can't pick favourites, trust me I've tried really hard, but you just can't.
I know this is a book for middle schoolers, but now I will let the hormonal teenager in me talk for a bit. There are so many things to ship!!! I'm so confused. There are so many possibilities that I don't know who with whom to ship or how much. Then there are just some characters that I would want to ship with everyone (ehm, ehm Rapunzel).
The book also gets so many plus points for:
+ Barfight - never enough of them. If there's a book full of bar fights just tell me and I will read it ASAP - I'm a succer for that <3
+ It's a retelling - I don't know what's so good about that stuff, but god I love it so much. It was all so well made, because all the characters had their own colourful back stories and also finally was talking about the prince Charming problematic
+ The chapter names - who doesn't love a well-made chapter name. I loved that all the headings followed the same format (Prince Charming… - e.g. Prince Charming Walks Into A Bar - yep here's the bar fight and you can already tell that was my favourite :D)
+ The gorgeous pictures - they are impossible to not love:
