Babel by R.F. Kuang
4.5
“Oderint dum metuant… Let them hate, so long as they fear.”
My first dark academia book, with very incredible world-building. Lay upon the world of translation in the University of Oxford. This book is a very slow pace, because of how detailed and vivid R. F Kuang tries to describe the world and system to its reader. We follow Robin, and we see the world through his POV most of the time.
It’s just sooo thick with information, history, and language and books. And I love it!
I have a fun reading experience and felt like I’m also a student of Babel. Academia world is portrayed really well, mix with murder, blood, revenge, and messed up system. Very high stakes in terms of literature and history.
Although marketed as a fantasy, I barely felt the fantasy element in this book. This is its only downside, as I felt more like I was wandering in a realistic world rather than a fantasy one.
Nonetheless, I do enjoy it. So many discussions about racism, classism, white supremacy, oppression and slavery. Women are being treated differently and how masculinity the society during this time.
It great book, recommend it!

"It's not right that you recruit students from other countries to work your translation centre and that their motherlands receive nothing in return."
didn’t expect i would enjoy this book more than my first read, i think one of the reasons is because of the discussion i had in Fable also. the emotion and sympathy i felt for each character, i felt so many emotions throughout the plot line. the few last chapters made me cry, gasping, and screaming. love-love this book!!
