The Road by Cormac McCarthy
5.0
Dystopian stories have always intrigued me, but this one went above and beyond.
McCarthy's storytelling stirred many emotions within me. Other senses such as scent and taste were enabled as well. His imagined world was bleak and barren. I could see it. I could feel what the father and son were experiencing every step of the way. I could feel the sensation of luckily finding food after going days without and taste the individual items. I smelled the rancidity of their clothes and passerby. I could hear the silence of their vast world. This journey was a hell of a ride.
Above all, the relationship between this father and son was heart wrenching. At my age I could easily put myself in the position of the father and imagine how his attitudes/decisions would feel. Through memory I could put myself in the son's shoes as well. Their bond was so stalwart it was endearing. It reminded me of my father and I personally.
This novel is sad but there are lessons in it about life, death, love, perseverance, bravery, beauty, pain among others which make it much more than just a sad tale. The reader becomes richer after having read this work. 5/5
