The Black Velvet Dress by J.E. Clarkson, J.E. Clarkson
4.0
Rating: 4/5 Penguins
Quick Reasons: audiobook was well-paced, poignant, and easy to follow; creeptastic, but more in the sense of "something lurking just around the corner" than in the "gore and jump scares" way; descriptively detailed; draws upon other ghost stories for inspiration; narrator helped to really bring this story to life
HUGE thanks to narrator Elah Khorasani and author J.E. Clarkson for the free Audiobook download of this title! My review of this book is voluntarily written and in no way altered or impacted by this gesture.
I find myself wondering, Penguins, if maybe LISTENING to horror stories might be creepier than actually reading them. I think, given the right narrator with the right cadence, voice, etc....it just might be. The narrator for this read reached out to me on Tiktok and asked if I'd be interested in listening to review....and I happily said ABSOLUTELY YES! Having finished the listen...I'm very glad that I did.
Elah Khorasani really brought this story to life with the cadence of her reading. There is a certain repetitive line that she took care to put different tones and inflections upon, to REALLY drive that creep factor through the roof. This story is poignantly written and descriptively detailed--no minute particulate is overlooked in J.E. Clarkson's vivid storytelling. This story is reminiscent of other ghost stories I've read or heard of "spurned lovers", "ghost brides", and the like--drawing upon those inspirations, J.E. Clarkson drew the veil ever thinner between our world and that of the recently (or not so recently) departed with expert craftsmanship.
This short story is bound to get your heart pumping on even the most blustery, winter-y day. You are sure to find yourself peeking around each corner, avoiding looking in the mirror, and deciding to NOT buy that dress after reading this tale. After all... did you choose it, or did it choose you? I definitely recommend this to lovers of supernatural horror, short stories, and all things that creep in the dead of the night. Keep your wits about you, Penguins...you never know where the next monster may find you.
