Pet by Akwaeke Emezi

5.0

Content/trigger warning: blood, eye mutilation, child abuse (physical/sexual, implied), pedophilia, sexual assault (past), violence.
Representation: Black trans main character, polyamorous relationship/parenting, nonbinary parent.

This took a bit to get into, but once the story got started, everything got dark and become a beautiful metaphor for rehabilitation and transformative justice. Akwaeke asks the questions: what do we do with monsters when they do monstrous things? how can we prevent monstrous things before it happens? what are the ways we can handle violence? and what do we do with our anger when we want justice?

Akwaeke's Pet opens our eyes to things that we often refuse to see and gives us a chance to find out how we can help those around us who hurt and and are hurt.
