Memnon & Selene: This Could Have Been Epic But, He Was Just Horrible
It really pains me to write this review because I love Laura Thalassa and her writing. But I have to be honest. I did not like this book.
Selene is a young witch, who suffers from loss of her memory with every bit of magic expelled, wishes to enter the Henbane Coven, a prestigious and powerful coven of witches. Believing that her magic isn't up to snuff, the witches send her to gather more "experience" by taking on a magical journey and securing herself a familiar, something she lacks. On her way to her destination, she hears a voice calling to her from beyond for help. Unable to resist, shenanigans ensue, and Selene finds herself magically opening the tomb of an immortal encased in a spell which she breaks. Once resurrected, the immortal, Memnon insists that Selene is his wife, Roxilana and SHE is the one who cursed him all these years. Memnon refuses to believe that Selene is not Roxilana and swears that she will pay for cursing him from centuries past.
Memnon was just not a nice guy. Yes, he came from a time where he was cruel and ruthless but the amount of aggression and lack of care, he showed for Selene was unbearable to read. He see-sawed back and forth with his feeling and emotions for her. One minute he was loving and concerned and the next, he was angry and vengeful. It was really hard to like him at all. Selene had the potential to be a very formidable heroine, but she just seemed to be a doormat for Memnon. I found myself waiting for her to "show up", even during the battle scenes but she always fell flat. She was defeated and depressing, and she started to take me down right along with her. The intimacy scenes were mediocre at best and the way Memnon could be intimate with her one minute and threatening the next was just too much for me to even consider this book romantic or endearing.
I'm sure there will be a Book Two but the sour taste this book left in my mouth is too fresh for me to consider reading the next one. perhaps I'll reconsider when there is more than one book, and I could see if the story turned around or continued its downward spiral.
I'm still a huge Laura Thalassa fan and will continue to read her but this one, in my book, was a miss.
Happy reading!
