Dear Martin by Nic Stone
5.0
I knew this book was going to be emotional, but I didn't expect it to be this emotional. I'm pretty sure that I cried through the entire thing. There was a mixture of good and, of course, sad tears. There were so many sweet moments between Justyce and SJ, really meaningful moments with Doc, and wonderful family moments between Justyce and his mom.
However, there is a lot more to this book than the happy moments. A lot more. I was crying through most of the final part of the book after Manny's death. That scene broke my heart, especially since it's a direct reflection of the world we live in.
That's what makes this book so important. Because it shows the cruelties and injustices of our world. Books like Dear Martin create empathy in readers by showing them experiences that are different from their own (in my case), OR, more importantly, gives representation to those who don't get to see themselves as represented in media as they should be.
This is such an important book, and definitely one of my favorites of the year so far.
