The Shining by Stephen King

3.0

i’m sorry, those hedge animals are just not scary! oh no, a leafy lion or dog or bunny appears! i get it, it’s scary cause it’s supernatural but that’s just too goofy for me. didn’t enjoy that, also did not at all enjoy the descriptions of the female characters. every time a person is a woman there has to be an added descriptive sentence like: “she was wearing a short, seductive skirt” or “he could see her stocking clad, sexy thighs etc” and i would get it if this was from maybe one character that’s just crazy hot for ladies 24/7 but it’s all the time throughout the book.
what is well done and actually succeeds in being scary are the flashbacks to jacks childhood and his violent father, and him slowly becoming more and more like him. now that’s terrifying!
i’m a big fan of the movie and i did enjoy that this ended differently, i think the two versions are kind of different stories and the endings only fit that particular version
