Beach Bodies by Nick Kolakowski
dark
mysterious
tense
fast-paced
- Plot- or character-driven? Plot
3.0
There was a point about halfway through where I had been following everything perfectly, without issue, and the story was “normal,” for lack of a better term, but suddenly everything broke and went completely off the rails bonkers. I thought that was really fun, I like when I’m surprised by books and I like weird and wild stuff. And this was much more wild than I thought it would be.
I appreciate that guesswork is a part of Beach Bodies, but I do wish we’d been given a little more info on the motivation behind the intrusion. The intruders mention a mission and some vague platitudes about humanity as a whole but even by the end, I don’t really understand why these people specifically have a mission to do what they’re doing. Why does it matter to them at all?
And why did that one thing even happen? I suppose I can guess, but ultimately it was an important event and I’ll never really understand it.
Even with unanswered questions, I enjoyed the Beach Bodies. The concept is awesome and not only was the twist at the end excellent, but I didn’t see it coming and that’s always a treat!
