Conversations with Friends by Sally Rooney
5.0
NOT SPOILER FREE!
I will say that I do feel that this rating does feel generous. It felt clunky in parts with no real plot. However even though some don’t enjoy that kind of story telling I did like this method. It felt like I was a fly on a wall looking in on a series of events that the protagonist, Frances was facing. This may sound strange but I enjoyed that the characters were unlikeable. In real life we are constantly facing real people who are also just as narcissistic and unlikeable as we see in this book.
Bobbi was one such charicature of the University type. Although the characters were never explicitly given explicit descriptions. For some this may piss people off, for others, like myself it gave me a sense of creativity about the book.
Finally,
The ending pissed me off. Why did Nick not just piss off with Melissa. I do feel like this particular plot could have been left off with Frances watching the video of Nick and Melissa singing in the kitchen. It felt like closure enough. The characters were all thoroughly unlikeable BUT I am one to enjoy, real, unlikeable people.
Edit: 31/12/22
I actually don’t remember the book ending like that. I always thought it ended with the video??? But upon reading it for a second time I like the ambiguity of the ending. Does Nick wait for Frances? Who knows.

Minor: Self harm
