Chasing Fireflies by Charles Martin
4.0
Charles Martin is a masterful story teller. I had a hard time putting this book down. Without lecturing, Mr Martin clearly gets across the point of the importance of a father in a child's life. Even though Mr Martin always has a naked encounter, his books are clean.
I gave the book a four because it's so well-written, and yet there are things that made me torn between a three and a four:
1. The sports descriptions got a little long and tedious for me. But I'm sure other readers enjoy that.
2. This is my third Charles Martin book and there is always a certain sameness to them: there are always abused women, children affected by the abuse, men who always know the right answers....Oh, and always a naked person.
3. The cover description makes it sound like a feel-good book. Yet there are a lot of triggers for people who have been sexual abused, in foster care, or had a loved one dealing with terminal illness. This could be a very difficult read for some people.
4. The books are touted as "inspirational". They are nice and clean, but it's a bit of a stretch to call them inspirational.
5. Real men fight when they need to and carry guns. I struggle with that philosophy!
