Next of Kin by Hannah Bonam-Young

emotional reflective

4.5

When I read Out on a Limb last year, I wanted to stop what I was doing to read Hannah Bonham Youngโ€™s first two books - just to see if sheโ€™s really THAT good.

She is, guys. I still have to read one more - but I just love how she writes.

๐Ÿ“˜ ๐—š๐—ฒ๐—ป๐—ฟ๐—ฒ: Contemporary romance

๐Ÿ“” ๐—ง๐—ฟ๐—ผ๐—ฝ๐—ฒ๐˜€: Opposites attract, slow burn, heโ€™s loved her all along, angst fest, found family.

๐Ÿ“– ๐—ฆ๐˜†๐—ป๐—ผ๐—ฝ๐˜€๐—ถ๐˜€: Chloeโ€™s birth mother gives birth to a baby - and Chloe has no choice but to step up to be her guardian. Shocked by the life change, sheโ€™s struggling to make ends meet when child services teams her up with Warren, a fellow guardian of his dead brother who needs a place to stay.

๐ŸŒŸ ๐—ฅ๐—ฒ๐˜ƒ๐—ถ๐—ฒ๐˜„: Thereโ€™s a few authors who I would say write like a warm hug, and HBY is one of them. And doing that while also writing about tough subjects is a gift.

Both Chloe and Warren had intense backstories, that also felt dramatically relatable.  Warren was a reformed bad boy, and watching him take care of his brother, who is deaf, made my chest hurt. Seeing Chloe take adjust to becoming the guardian of her baby sister was equally as emotional - but watching these four wounded people come together as a family was the absolute best.

If you love those books where thereโ€™s sweepingly romantic gesturesโ€ฆ where strangers become familyโ€ฆ and where you get some spice with your declarations of love, this one is for you. Just donโ€™t blame me if you shed a tear too.
