Why Buddhism is True: The Science and Philosophy of Meditation and Enlightenment by Robert Wright

5.0

The author does an excellent job of linking evolutionary psychology with Buddhist thought. Specifically, humans have certain habits of thought that have developed over the course of evolution, yet some of the adaptations have been maladaptive, particularly vis-à-vis the conditions of modern life. Buddhism, both in broad sketch and fine detail, by and large gets it right and it therefore has something to teach us. The author's style is direct and his personal experiences are conveyed with humility. If you're coming from a Western, secular perspective and looking for an introduction to Buddhism, or if you are looking to to deepen your commitment to and understanding of a meditation practice, this book should be high on your list.
