🍃🔮Sorcery and Small Magics is the first book in a cosy fantasy trilogy🔮🍃
I found the book really cute and entertaining. The plot's fun, the story whimsical, the characters mostly enjoyable, and while the magic system's kind of dumb, as long as I didn't think too hard about things, I had a great time reading this book.
Initially, Sorcery and Small Magics felt a bit like a mediocre Snowbaz fanfic 😆 Magical boarding school, rival sorcerers, Leo - the MC - 's magic is wildly unpredictable whereas the LI is at the top of every class and impeccably put together, plus his last name is Grimm. Leo seems obsessed with Sebastian Grimm to the point his female bff points it out multiple times. And that's before the whole spell thing happens. So yeah, definite Snowbaz similarities.
However, this book only has 1 first person POV (and the MC sometimes talks to the reader which is a little weird) which I'm not sure's the best decision. Leo's sudden realiziation that Grimm's hot and he likes him might've worked better if we knew whether Grimm felt the same, since I didn't get that from him. This was advertised as a slowburn romantasy with yearning and tension, and I felt none of that.
For a book with a love curse as its main plot point, I literally felt no love, tension, or want. I thought the book read more as a whimsical story with rivals to friends, rather than ANY sort of romance. It didn't bother me until I saw it advertised as a romance because I'd have to disagree with that.
Nevertheless, as it's part of a trilogy, maybe there's going to be romance and tension later on. There are definitely things I'd like to get even more into, like Leo's crippling self-doubt and how he's starting to manage it, his alcoholism, and his supposed feelings for his arch nemesis.
Sorcery and Small Magics was a fun little story and had a lot of promising things going for it. It did fail on the romance front imo, but I'm keen to read the rest of the trilogy when released to see where Leo and Grimm go from here.
